About us

Farm & Family

Birds and Butterflies is a family farm. We are Annet, the daughter of a Ugandan coffee farmer, and Kaapo, from Finland, who spent his childhood in Zambia.

Our work has taken us to different parts of the world, and we have lived the busy city life among the skyscrapers. Yet our hearts have always stayed with Africa and with nature.

Here is how a piece of bare land became our home, and why we would like to share it with you.

Our story

Roots & Reasons

In 2012 we had the chance to buy a large piece of land in a remote corner of Mpigi District. We did not have a clear plan at first. Little by little the land became a home: a farmhouse, a fenced compound, animals, coffee, gardens and, in time, the first guest rooms.

By Ugandan standards ours is a large coffee farm. Most of the country’s coffee is grown by family farmers on plots of just a few acres. On our land the coffee covers around 70 acres, next to a large area of natural forest.

Over the years we have realised that nowhere else do we feel as content and happy as we do here. The nature, the quiet and the warmth of the people put us at ease the moment we arrive home.

We would be delighted to share this with you.
